Audi isn't showing signs of slowing down its involvement into the electric car movement, which means some of its former standout cars might have to suffer in the long term, including the R8 supercar and the TT sports car.
Speaking to Top Gear, Audi's global chief of sales and marketing, Hildegard Wortmann, said that this year her company plans to launch more EVs than ICE-powered cars. In addition, Audi aims to offer "the biggest choice of EVs of any premium manufacturer."
"It's a strong commitment. The future is electric. By the end of 2025 we will have 20 EVs, plus more plug-in hybrids," added Wortmann.
The Audi official also had a little something to say about the brand's current approach in finding new niches and launching SUV-coupes, which she claims has to happen as customers change and "you have to go for new segments."
That said, Top Gear also asked about the future of the R8 and the answer might not be to everyone's liking. While Wortmann recognizes that the R8 is an icon, she sees it as an icon of the past. Which means whatever model comes to replace the R8 must be more than just an R8 with an electric motor.
Moreover, the future of the Audi TT seems uncertain as customers have moved away from roadsters.} On the bright side, Wortmann also concluded that Audi has a history of launching "emotional models" and that they still have "lots of ideas."
So, while Audi might decide to sacrifice some of its iconic models like the R8 and TT, we might get reinterpretations of those said cars. Time will tell.
