The automotive market has evolved to the point where carmakers offer a wide range of intermediate versions of their vehicles. Can't afford a BMW M but you also want something above the standard model? You can get one with the M Sport package. The same goes for various Mercedes-Benz models and, starting 2017, for a couple of Audi vehicles too. The German firm has just launched the Audi Sport Performance Parts line, which adds various upgrades to the R8, TT, TTS and TT RS.

With upgrades for the exterior, interior, suspension, and exhaust system, the Sport Performance Parts package is also a bit different from what you can get from BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Specifically, it's a retrofit range, so you can purchase it for a car you already own. The bundles are scheduled to go on sale this summer, initially in Germany, but other markets will receive them later on. The good news is that Audi is planning to launch similar ranges for additional models in the future. Find out what these packages include in the review below.

Exterior

The most visible add-ons from this bundle are the exterior aero bits. Developed in the Audi wind tunnel, they include clear-cut highlights on the front air inlets, side skirts, and the rear diffuser, as well as a splitter and flics on the front bumper and the fixed rear wing. On top of giving the R8 and the TT a more race-inspired look, they also improve downforce. On the R8, downforce increases by 220 pounds to 551 pounds at 205 mph, while at 93 mph it doubles to 114.6 pounds compared to the standard model. All these parts are made from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) on the R8 and from CFRP and plastic on the TT. An engine hood with larger air vents is also available for the TT. All features have the Audi Sport logo for a more unique appearance.

Interior

Inside, the first thing that catches the eye is the sports steering wheel with multi-function controls. The steering wheel is similar to both the TT and R8, being trimmed in Alcantara and featuring a red stripe in the 12 o'clock position. CFRP shift paddles are also available for models equipped with the seven-speed S Tronic transmission. For the TT, Audi also developed a custom strut cross brace. Also made out of CFRP, it replaces the rear seats, thus reducing the coupe's curb weight by some 44 pounds, while also enhancing torsional rigidity and improving handling when cornering at speed.

Exhaust

The Sports Performance Parts package also comes with a new exhaust system. Crafted by renowned company Akrapovic, it has a lightweight muffler made of titanium and gives all cars a unique engine note. The exhaust pipes have unique trim for the TTS and TT RS models.

Suspension

Chassis upgrades are quite comprehensive, starting with new brake linings that are more powerful and less prone to fading. Available for both steel and ceramic brakes, they come with fluorescent red carrying plates made from titanium for the Audi R8. They are also lighter, shaving 2.2 pounds off the car's curb weight. For the TT RS model, the bundle includes steel front brake discs with multiple bolt mountings. Audi also offers various brake cooling kits for all versions of the TT range.

Moving over to suspension components, there's a two- or three-way coilover setup for both the TT and R8. For TT models with Quattro AWD, the retrofit package includes a cross-member reinforcement bar on the rear axle. It improves rigidity and makes handling even more precise. Audi TT RS owners can also subsequently increase their car’s top speed from 155 to 174 mph. Finally, Audi offers a set of fully milled, black 20-inch wheels that reduce weight by up to 15.9 pounds on the TT and by up to 17.6 pounds on the R8. These wheels are also wrapped in bespoke tires.
