You can forgive Audi Sport for being a little too eager to showcase itself as a full-fledged performance brand. After all, it wasn’t that long ago when the company, then known as Quattro GmbH, had little to show in the way of performance models. But, times have changed, and Audi Sport is at the forefront of that change. It now has 11 models to speak of, including the R8 supercar. More importantly, it’s planning to further expand its offerings with five new models earmarked to be released by 2020. Considering that we’re already close to jumping into 2018, Audi Sport’s roadmap calls for all five models to be released sometime in the next two years and change.

It’s still not clear as to which performance models Audi Sport is looking into, but we do know that in addition to the coupe and convertible versions of the R8, the performance brand also has sedan and hatchback versions of the RS3 in the fold. Then there’s the RS4 Avant, RS5 Coupe, RS6 Avant, RS7 Sportback, RS Q3, and coupe and convertible versions of the TT RS sports car. That’s 11 models in total, not counting the S8 Plus. There are a number of possibilities on what performance models Audi Sport plans to introduce. In any event, there’s a lot going on within Audi Sport these days, and it figures that with all the plans it's making, the next two years is going to be a lot busier. Who knows, we might even see the other Audi Sport performance car that’s been in the rumors lately…

What can we expect from Audi Sport in the next two-plus years?

Looking at its current lineup, a convertible version of the RS5 figures to be an early favorite to shift into production. Don’t sleep on the possibility of an RS4 sedan and an RS6 sedan also being considered. Should Audi eschew these models, RS-branded crossovers could also be in the mix.

That’s all well and good, but what I’m really curious about now is this one car that was in the rumor mill a month ago: an Audi hypercar.

Remember back in late August when none other than Audi Sport CEO Stephan Winkelmann talked to Automotive News and said that he’s in favor of bringing an Audi hypercar to life? In his own words, he said that a hypercar is something that Audi Sport not only “deserves,” but more importantly, that there’s “demand outside” for one and that the brand’s customer base is “looking for one.”

Given the sheer number of hypercars that we’ve seen in the past five years, it’s not entirely out of the question that Audi is considering building its own. After all, it’s become apparent from how popular hypercars like the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder are that there’s a huge market for these cars, price tags notwithstanding. Even the two newest entries to this ultra-exclusive segment - the Aston Martin Valkyrie and the Mercedes-AMG Project One - are expected to sell out if they’re not already.

Clearly, this is a market that’s fertile at the moment, and Audi Sport would be foolish to not, at the very least, consider planting its own seed. Whether it does so or not is another question entirely but, from the way the automotive winds are blowing, I’m willing to bet that at least one of the brand’s planned five-model expansion will be a hypercar.
