Due to the fact that Porsche and Volkswagen are now working hand in hand to create the ultimate in German design and engineering, one can only wonder, what will become of the brand name? Surprisingly enough, we could see the return of Auto Union. The name was first used in 1932 when the four German automobile manufacturers: Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer merged to make up the four interlocking rings we see today.

These words came directly from the horse’s mouth, the thoroughbred being Dr. Ferdinand Piech, who said that the historically significant name was being considered for when the two companies complete their merger. When this happens Volkswagen will gain full control of the German sports car maker and end with the Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking getting the boot.

Image what they could do if they brought back a modern day version of the Auto Union Type C racecar!
