Marketing aside, the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S from Bad Boys for Life, the third installment of the Bad Boys franchise is a nice nod back to the 911 (964) Turbo 3.6 from the first movie.

Sure, we would have liked to see the new 911 Turbo in the able hands of Mike Lowrey (Will Smith), but a Carrera 4S is still a 911 and you won’t hear us complaining anymore. The thing is, though, why does it sound like a Carrera GT?

The Carrera GT packs a V-10, while the new 911 Carrera uses a boxer-six

You might be able to fool an audience that has nothing to do with cars, but you can’t trick a true gearheads. Yes, you’ll be able to enjoy those scenes in the full movie as well, but here’s something else that caught the ear of a bunch of commentators.

That something is the sound. In all fairness, the Carrera 4S shown in the video doesn’t sound like a Carrera 4S.

Which doesn’t make sense, since the 911 packs a 3.0-liter straight-six turbo engine good for 414 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, while the Carrera GT is motivated by a 5.7-liter naturally-aspirated V-10 cranking out 605 horsepower and 435 pound-feet of twist.

Then again, this is Hollywood and such shenanigans are expected. At the same time, eagle-eyed - or should we say bat-eared - car nuts have spotted the fake sounds right away and were quick to voice their irritation in the video’s comments section.

Either way, this gimmick doesn’t change the 911 Carrera 4S’ status as an out and out sports car right at the top of the food chain in its segment. We’d only wish Hollywood did its homework before messing around with the cars most of us adore.
