Audi Could Send The Audi R8 and TT to the Grinder in the Name of Cutting Costs

Remember when I told you that Audi Sport will phase out ICE-power RS models? Well, now thanks to the same cost-cutting measures – probably thanks to parent company Volkswagen – Audi may be forced to either axe two of its most important models or do something new with them entirely. Regardless of what happens, it certainly looks like the Audi R8 and TT won’t be sticking around too much longer, at least not as we know them today, anyway.

The truth is that relatively low-volume cars like the Audi TT and Audi R8 are always the first to be glared at when Audi or VAG are looking to cut costs and save money. In most cases, we can blame the dirty VAG for that, but we’ll leave that discussion for another time. The point is that both of these cars have come under scrutiny once again and could be subject to bear the brunt of the “Audi Transformation Plan.” This much has become clear and comes courtesy of a source that’s reportedly close to new Audi Chairman Markus Duesmann:

According to that same source, the TT and R8 could get the axe altogether or they could be reborn as fully electric cars. And, that’s not all. Audi could move deeper into electrification than expected this early on, as the company’s “combustion-engined model platform strategy” is also under review. What does that mean exactly? Well, thanks to the MQB platform Audi gets most of the tech from VW for its smaller cars, which means little – in the grand scheme of things – needs to be spent in terms of development. The MLB platform, however is mostly all Audi, so R&D for models like the Q5, Q7, Q8, A4, A6, and A8 falls on the company’s shoulders.

Audi Could Become Porsche, Porsche Could Become Audi

It’s painfully obvious that nearly every car built by one of the many VAG companies share a lot of parts. Sure, engines might have a different tune and body panels might look different, but even the Lamborghini Urus is very closely related to an Audi with some reports saying that you can even see the Audi Logo on the Urus’ steering wheel if you pull back the material. And, it looks like things could get worse as Audi and VAG as a parent company move to cut costs even more. One step to take would be to bring Porsche and Audi closer together so that the MLB platform – which also underpins the Porsche Macan, Lamborghini Urus, Audi E-tron, Porsche Cayenne, and even the Bentley Bentayga – are “more systematically paired” with the MSB platform that was built by Porsche and use dto underpin the Panamera and Bentley continental GT.

This wouldn’t necessarily be anything new, though. Audi and Porsche co-developed the V-6 engine that’s spread throughout both lineups, and they worked together on the Porsche Premium Electric (PPE) platform that will underpin the next-gen, all-electric Porsche Macan and the Audi Q5 E-Tron, among many other future models. However, at what point will Porsche, Audi, Bentley, and Volkswagen lose so much of their independent DNA that buying a Porsche really does mean overpaying for an Audi or Volkswagen? Hopefully that won’t happen, but that’s also a problem when one parent company owns too many brands.

Keep in mind that the Audi Transformation Plan kicked off long before Duesmann became Audi chairman and long before COVID created a sales nightmare for automakers. It was actually initiated way back in 2018 by Bram Schot who retired in April 2020. In all, Audi is looking to save or cut as much as $17.64 billion by the end of 2022, two-thirds of which is earmarked for EV development and should contribute to Audi’s plan to introduce 20 EVs and 10 PHEVs by the end of 2025. It should be noted, however, that a major chunk of the savings made by Audi are centered around the concept of streamlining software development within VAG as a whole.
