Believe it or Not, Elon Musk is a Gamer - His Favorites Might Surprise You
But he does have genuinely good tasteby Andrei Nedelea, on
Elon Musk has a seemingly never-ending stream of problems to fix between running Tesla and SpaceX, but he apparently doesn’t ignore a favorite pastime of his: gaming. Yes, that’s right, and he actually has quite specific and interesting taste in games too.
For instance, he likes titles like BioShock which he appreciates for being a “genre-pushing, narrative-driven shooting game that raises questions about our basic concepts of how video games work.”
But it also raises questions about capitalism and the moral backing behind it through its portrayal of a dystopian underwater world built by a fictional business magnate by the name of Andre Ryan (whose name is a direct nod to Ayn Rand, a Russian-born American philosopher and novelist known for her two most famous books, “The Fountainhead” and “Atlas Shrugged.”
Musk also likes the Mass Effect series, and it’s not hard to see why - it’s an open world game where choices matter with a focus on traveling through space, colonizing planets, and the intricacies of interstellar politics. He believes that the second game in the series is one of the best gaming titles ever made, but we’d add that it does need to be played in context, especially since you can import your character from one game into the next in order to essentially continue the same story.
Kerbal Space Program is also ranked among his favorites, and we can perfectly see why as it simulates the process of building a spacecraft, from piecing it together component by component, to launching it off into space - it’s actually quite a challenging game that requires genuine knowledge of at least the basic elements of space travel; it is a game designed for space nerds, so it’s right up Musk’s alley.
Other titles he mentioned as favorites are Saint’s Row IV, an over the top open world action, the Civilization series, the Fallout series, and even the original Warcraft strategy game from 1994.
Musk’s preference for these games is not hard to understand based on what we know his interests are, although we’re a bit surprised he doesn’t play any car building tycoon style games; but then again, he deals with that on a daily basis, so maybe playing a simulated version of it would be overdoing it.
