The Fast and the Furious franchise can be blamed for the rising cost of Japanese sports cars in the U.S. The franchise is 17 years old this year, and among its biggest contributions to popular culture is the interest in the Japanese sports cars that appeared in the movie, including the original Toyota Supra, the Mazda RX-7, and the Acura Integra GS-R.

The Fast and Furious franchise was good for a lot of things. It helped put a spotlight on the underground street racing culture that was prevalent back in the day. It also turned actors like Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and the late Paul Walker into bonafide Hollywood A-listers. It also introduced a lot of Americans to some of the best Japanese sports cars from the late 90s and early 2000s. In fact, ClassicCars.com points out that the introduction of these performance cars has given way to increased interest in owning them. That has paved the way for prices of cars like the Mazda RX-7 and Toyota Supra to increase, effectively turning them into must-have collectibles, especially from collectors who were teenagers when the first movie came out in 2001.

A 1993 Mazda RX-7, for example, costs around $55,000 to $60,000 these days. That’s a huge increase from the sports car’s original price of around $33,000 when it was first sold back in 1993. Take inflation into the equation, and the price of the RX-7 would be around $57,360. That amount isn’t too far from how much second-hand models are selling for these days.

The effect of the blockbuster franchise is even more pronounced with the fourth-gen Supra. According to ClassicCars.com, the average used Supra these days goes for around $70,000. That’s an explosive growth in value compared to when it cost around $50,000 for a new model. This is also interesting when you compare it to the expected price of the new Toyota Supra that’s expected to be released sometime in 2019. Toyota hasn’t officially announced the price for the new model, but expect it to fall in the vicinity of $55,000 to $60,000 for the base model. If that ends up being the case, a used fourth-gen Supra would be more ClassicCars.com than a brand new, fifth-generation model.

Even a model like the 1994 Acura Integra GS-R, the same car that Jordana Brewster’s character, Mia Toretto, drove in the first movie is getting a lot of nostalgic love from collectors. Apparently, an average used model today costs around $15,000, which isn’t much of a drop from its original price of about $20,000.

Needless to say, buying any of these cars will cost you a lot of money. Fortunately, there are “alternative” models that can be had if you find yourselves priced out of the RX-7, Supra, and Integra GS-R. Among the suggestions ClassicCars has for fans include the Nissan 240SX, which is only worth a “few thousand dollars” these days. That’s a great bargain for a car that cost almost $22,000 back in 1997. The downside to that, though, is the rarity of unmodified examples that exist to this day. Another option is a Mitsubishi GT3000 VR-4 Turbo, which can be had for less than $25,000. If that’s too high for your budget, you can get a used Nissan 300ZX Turbo for under $20,000 and a Lexus SC300 for less than $10,000.

Collectors have plenty of choices as far as buying used Japanese sports cars. They even have a choice of splurging on one now, or they can wait a few more years for the R33 or R34 generations of the Nissan Skyline GT-R. Both models are expected to be available in the U.S. once they turn 25 years old. Do the math, and that’s 2020 for the R33 and around 2023 for the 34. Unfortunately, if the demand for the model remains high by then — very likely — their prices might even exceed the value of a used fourth-generation Supra.
