BMW is dropping more info on the incoming i4 all-electric four-door and in doing so, it pledges allegiance to top-notch performance - something that's been at the core of the brand since day one - beyond the mundane straight-line sprint. What this basically mean is that even when the road gets twisty, the new i4 should handle like a dream.

"For the first time, we've developed a BMW with sporty DNA for purely electric driving entirely from scratch. The BMW i4 offers everything BMW stands for - and it's fully electric, too."

These words belong to BMW i4 Project Manager David Alfredo Ferrufino Camacho, but what do they mean exactly? Simply put, expect the i4 to retain the brand's core DNA as far as handling and driving dynamics go.

Speaking of which, BMW tells us that the i4's powertrain will produce 523 horsepower (390 kilowatts). There's no info whether that power will come from one or two electric motors, but either way, a battery pack rated at around 80 kWh will provide the required flow of electrons. So, yeah, the sprint from a standstill to 62 mph (100 kph) is going to be quick - BMW says it should take four seconds - but the Bavarians are about more than that.

BMW also mentions that the tuning and design of the chassis and suspension will make the i4 "attach itself to the road" and that the steering will feature "a high degree of accuracy." In all fairness, this is nothing short of what we'd expect from BMW, but at the same time it shouldn't be taken for granted. EVs are still plagued by the increased weight that comes with the e-motor(s) and batteries, so milking that extra squeeze of performance from a heavy car - be it of the performance ilk - isn't an easy task.

Elsewhere, BMW expects the i4 to offer a maximum range of up to 600 kilometers (over 370 miles) as per WLTP estimates. And if you can't wait to see it in action, we've got good news for you: BMW's engineers are just making the last pre-production tweaks before the manufacturer starts assembling the i4 at its Munich plant, so a debut is just a couple of months away.
