BMW has announced plans to launch a production car at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The German automaker was coy about the identity of the mysterious model, but unless Bimmer has plans for another swerve, it’s possible that we are finally going to see the long-awaited, much-hyped BMW Z4 Roadster.

“The identity of the World Premiere model will be revealed closer to the time of the press conference. Suffice it to say; this new model will certainly be an emotional addition to the BMW range.”

Those are the exact words BMW said in its statement. The company didn’t specifically identify the identity of this “World Premiere” model, but the fact that it described it as an “emotional addition to the BMW range” points to it being a performance car. And unless Bimmer has another performance car in the works, the only model that fits that description is the new Z4 Roadster.

The timing of the Z4’s arrival couldn’t be better, too. It’s going to finally show its face a month after its sister from another mother, the Toyota Supra, made its own “debut” at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this month.

To date, we’ve had no shortage of spy shots, patents, teasers, and rumors about the returning Z1. It’s about time that all that teasing gets its proper pay-off. On that end, there’s no better place to make a debut than the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the same event where BMW delivered the first batch of U.S.-spec i8 models to its first customers in the country.

Clearly, the German automaker has a soft spot for the event, and four years after delivering the first i8s in the country, BMW is once again using Pebble Beach as the venue for this important milestone. Granted, it’s not a guarantee that the Z4 is the car that BMW is talking about in its statement. The attendance of the BMW M850i Coupe and BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe at the event means that the model in question could be the M8.

While we won’t be disappointed with that debut, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the M8 this early since it’s still in the middle of its development. The Z4, on the other hand, is ready for the spotlight. Given how important this model is to Bimmer — it wouldn’t take this long to develop if it weren’t important — there’s no better place to hold its world debut than in the event that has had no shortage of industry-shaking revelations in recent years.

So, circle those calendars, folks. The BMW Z4 could be coming to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Here’s to hoping that this is the scenario that plays out.
