BMW’s Leipzig plant will roll out one final special edition i3 compact hatchback before it ceases production after nearly a decade. The i3 was BMW’s first attempt toward electrified mobility for the masses, and it was fairly successful with 250,000 examples of the i3 produced since its introduction in 2013. The HomeRun Edition will be the Bavarian auto giant’s last hurrah to its first mass-produced EV.

BMW’s i division was formed in 2011, and its first initiative was to bring a completely different perspective to BMW’s fanbase. Hence, the introduction of the i8 Coupe, which was followed by the i3 hatchback. But unlike the i8, the i3 is a pure EV unless it is optioned with the range-extending gas engine from the Motorrad division of BMW. Unfortunately, the latter has come to the end of its life cycle. As a result, the HomeRun Edition of the i3 will be limited to only ten examples and will pay homage to the brand's best-selling BMW EV up until now. BMW withdrew the i3 from the U.S. market back in 2021, so the limited edition city runner will only be available in Europe.

The HomeRun Edition of the i3 will pack several unique features such as adaptive headlights, an electric glass roof, solar control glazing, and special 20-inch alloy wheels with a double-spoke design. However, on the inside, the i3 is specially equipped with

- Vernasca Dark Truffle leather upholstery

- Leather instrument panel

- Leather steering wheel

- Wireless charging pad

- Harman Kardon speakers

- Carum Grey roof lining

- Ambient lighting

BMW has also worked on the performance and the overall range of the i3. The HomeRun Edition i3 will put out 181 horsepower instead of 170, but the range has increased to 150 miles, thanks to a bigger 42.2-kWh capacity battery. However, It will still be a rear-wheel-drive car. The Leipzig factory will continue expanding the supply of e-drive components such as electric motors, chassis, and battery packs, and later on will manufacture the upcoming electric Mini Countryman in 2023.
