It’s been a little more than a year since BMW unveiled the production version of the i8 sports car at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and the hybrid vehicle is finally ready to meet its U.S. customers. But before you sign that check and hand it over to BMW, make sure you check out the brand-new i8 configurator the Germans fired up. It comes with everything you need to know about trim levels, standard and optional equipment, as well as precise information about how much each extra feature costs. You can have it built just the way you like it before placing that order.

If the i8 is a tad too expensive for you or you just don’t find it useful, it’s a good way to spend some time with Munich’s brand-new, state-of-the-art vehicle. If time is not on your side these days, stick around for the full details on the car’s trims and exterior and interior choices.

Before we proceed any further, we’ll remind you that the i8 comes with only one powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine and an electric motor. That might not seem like much for a sports car, but rest assured, the combo delivers 362 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The gasoline mill sends 231 ponies and 236 pound-feet to the rear wheels, while the electric power unit delivers 131 horses and 184 pound-feet of torque to the front axle.

Trims

Because BMW likes to play fancy dress up games when it comes to the i8, the four available trims are called "Worlds." The base model is called Mega World, while the first mid-range version goes by the name Giga World. Whereas the Mega comes at no extra cost, the Giga i8 will send you back an extra $2,000. Of course, the amount will reflect itself in a few additional features. For $3,000 you get the Tera World, but if you wanna go all the way up you can purchase the Pure Impulse World trim for an extra $10,800. With the latter, you get yourself an i8 that starts from $147,450. That’s nearly as much as a Porsche 911 Turbo!

Exterior

The BMW i8’s exterior color palette is limited to only four options. Sure, the i8 is no Mini Cooper — a car that comes has 11 color options — but an exquisite vehicle like this could’ve used a few more exterior hues, especially since half of them are less enticing shades of grey and silver. That being said, you can either have the i8 in Sophisto Grey Metallic, Ionic Silver Metallic and Crystal White Pearl Metallic, complemented by either Frozen Grey or Frozen Blue accents on the side skirts and around the kidney grille. The fourth option and most lively one is the Protonic Blue Metallic paint with Frozen Grey accents. The Crystal White Pearl is the only selection that comes at a price, adding an extra $1,800 to the sticker.

Interior

Things are less customizable inside the cabin, where each trim level comes with its own interior color. The Mega and Tera World versions, for instance, are restricted to a Spice Grey and Dalbergia Brown leather upholstery, respectively, both with cloth inserts. The Giga i8, on the other hand, can be ordered in either Ivory White or Amido full-perforated leather. Lastly, the Pure Impulse model features Carum Spice Grey full-perforated leather, which isn’t that spectacular for a trim that claims a $10,800 premium.

Wheels

Although the i8 benefits from only two wheel designs, I must admit both are quite beautiful to look at and blend in well with the sports car’s styling. The first set of rollers comes in a five-spoke configuration, with each spoke made from three individual spokes. The second proposition carries a Turbine, ten-spoke design for a more dynamic look. Both light-alloy wheels measure 20 inches and come at no extra cost.
