After joining the SUV, hybrid, and all-electric markets in recent years, BMW is preparing to enter one more niche. This time around, it wants to join a really small market that has yet to gain traction: convertible crossovers. And it wants to do so with a drop-top version of recently introduced BMW X2.

That's the word from Spain's Motor.es, which claims that BMW is serious considering a convertible X2. According to the report, the German firm conducted a study recently that found that a significant number of drivers would consider such a model. BMW is reportedly running a second study as we speak, with a business to be made later this year. So yeah, the vehicle still needs a green light to go into production, but it may be closer than we think. Especially with Land Rover now offering a convertible version of the Evoque.

Would It Make Sense?

Five years ago, I would've said that such a vehicle would be pointless. But the market has changed dramatically, and it seems that diversity is the new black. With the Land Rover Evoque Convertible already in dealerships, the X2 cabriolet will have an actual purpose on the market.

On the other hand, the X2 is about the same size as the 2 Series. It only rides a bit higher and has a slightly taller roof. Sure, many styling cues are different, but without a top, there's a big chance that it will look a lot like the 2 Series Convertible. This might not be good for the business in the long run.

Should BMW Build It?

As much as I'm tempted to yell "oh no, not another crossover!" I'd actually like to see this vehicle go into production. I miss the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, discontinued in 2014 after only three years on the market, and the Evoque Cabriolet is the only option available now. And to be honest, drop-top SUVs aren't that weird to begin with, and they've been around for decades. The Jeep Wrangler, the Suzuki X90, and the Toyota RAV4 are just a few examples that go back to the late 1980s and early 1990s. If we also include the Jeep CJ in this category, the convertible crossover is actually more than 70 years old.
