Why it matters

Video game junkies like myself don’t need to be told that free content updates are always welcome on their consoles, more so when said update includes something that I can enjoy until my thumbs start growing calluses.

The BMW M Performance M4 Safety Car fits in that category. If the M Performance accessories given to the M4 Safety Car serve as accurate indications of what I expect out of this beauty, I might brave the pain and suffering of mangled thumbs just to get the most out of the M4 Safety Car.

At the very least, I’m looking forward to see how the car drives in the streets and tracks of GT6. Maybe I’ll even throw it in a friendly competition against a rival model. Who knows, really. What I do know is that the M Performance M4 Safety Car is headed to the world of Gran Turismo 6, brimming with promise and potential, and ready to take the world of virtual racing by storm.

BMW M4 Safety Car

Since making its debut in December 2013, the BMW M4 has literally been everywhere. It’s been turned into a successful race car; it’s been treated to a significant amount of aftermarket customization; it’s even spawned a host of special edition models, none more recent than the M4 DTM Champion Edition.

To say that the M4 has been making the circuit rounds would be a massive understatement. Yet despite its rather hectic schedule, BMW has found ways to freshen it up consistently with new accessories from its own M Performance division.

The M Performance M4 Safety Car is a perfect example of this. The car began as a series production but slowly evolved into a certified piece of eye candy.

BMW began by dressing it up in a custom body wrap using the three unmistakable colors of BMW Motorsport. Once that was done, the M4 was brought to M Performance where a full slate of carbon-fiber components were installed.

The front section of the M4 received black BMW kidney grilles, LED grille-mounted flashers, and carbon-fiber mirror caps. On the back, a sporty new rear spoiler is prominently showcased, as well as a new splitter system, a new rear diffuser, and a titanium exhaust system with carbon-fiber exhaust tips.

Side splitters, black side gills, and the customary LED rooftop light bar complete the M Performance modifications of M4 Safety Car.

Don’t expect any engine upgrades on the M4 Safety Car. But that shouldn’t be a problem since the sports coupe already comes with a 3.0-liter, inline-six engine that packs an impressive 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. That good enough to post a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.1 seconds to go with a top speed of 155 mph.
