Google has removed the German BMW website from its data base. According to a posting by a Google employee on a blog this past Saturday, Google removed the BMW website because BMW’s site violated Google guidelines designed to prevent manipulation of search results. Specifically, pages on the site would appear one way on the search results, but when the link was clicked, the user would be automatically redirected to an entirely different page.
Google has confirmed removal of the German BMW site, but has refused to comment further. Google guidelines prohibit “deceiv[ing] users or present[ing] different content to search engines than you display to users.” Google indicated last year that it would be monitoring foreign language websites more closely than in the past to assure compliance with its guidelines.
