BMW->ke178 has dropped details on the next-gen 7 Series, and it offers new tech, more space, less weight, and more efficiency. U.S. customers will be able to choose between either the 740i or 750i xDrive models, both scheduled to arrive in showrooms this fall. MSRP will start at $81,300 for the 740i and $97,400 for the 750i xDrive, excluding destination and handling charges.

Stateside, the new 7 Series->ke323 will be offered exclusively in the long-wheelbase version, adding an inch to the overall length compared to the outgoing model. BMW claims the new four-door->ke142 is “the roomiest sedan the brand has ever built and features class-leading rear seat legroom.” Other features include a touchscreen, four-zone Automatic Climate Control, gesture control, and wireless phone charging.

The tech continues outside the cabin. Like the 2015 i8 hybrid, the new 7 Series uses materials like carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics in the chassis to reduce curb weight by 190 pounds, while maintaining a high level of torsional rigidity. Up front is an Active Kidney Grille, which closes at speed to improve aerodynamics, a first for the U.S. LEDs are in place for the headlights and fog lights. Exterior paint options include two non-metallic and nine metallic color shades. Depending on the model, either 18- or 19-inch wheels come as standard.

For the drivetrain, BMW has redeveloped its V-8 engine with TwinScroll turbos that come with flow-separated, bank-specific exhaust manifolds made from thin-wall castings. Efficiency has been increased, and output is 445 horsepower. For the 740i, there’s a TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder that produces 320 horsepower.
