If there were ever two models that served as pioneers of their kind in their respective markets, the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 are as good examples as you can find. The X5 was introduced in 1999, becoming one of the first premium SUVs to hit the modern automotive market. 10 years later, the X6 followed suit, ushering in a new sub-segment that has come to be known as the coupe-SUVs. Today, both the X5 and X6 are still soldiering on, and BMW is doing its part to keep models fresh with the release of the X5 M and X6 M Black Fire Editions.
Developed specifically for the high-performance M versions of both models, the Black Fire Editions provide a more menacing visual profile for both the X5 M and X6 M. The upgrades included are more cosmetic in nature than anything else, highlighted by the use of a Sapphire Black Metallic paint finish on the SUVs' bodywork. The black treatment is actually spread throughout, covering significant spaces in both the exterior and interior. The end result certainly speaks to how Bimmer intended these two SUVs to turn out as both special edition models look about as sinister as anything we’ve seen from either of them in the past.

Lots of new goodies here
The Sapphire Black Metallic paint finish on both the X5 M and X6 M is the unquestioned highlight of the exterior of both Dark Fire Edition models. Fortunately, it’s not the only “new” feature that really makes the special edition models stand out. Complementing it from an exterior point-of-view is blacked-out kidney grille, a pair of carbon fiber mirror caps, and a new set of 21-inch forged alloy wheels. There’s very little space on the exterior of both the X5 M and the X6 M for any other color except black, so from this position, it’s easy to see why Bimmer adopted the “Dark Fire” name to both special edition SUVs.
Move to the interior and there’s plenty of more of that black treatment. Fortunately, it’s not completely dark in this area thanks to the Mugello Red shade on the full fine-grain Merino leather upholstery. Both special edition SUVs have this. On top of that, both models also get power-operated front seats, a piano black trim, a choice between a leather-wrapped steering wheel or an Alcantara-wrapped one, and a bit of personalization from BMW Individual in the form of an Alcantara headliner. A special logo that’s unique to both models can also be seen on the passenger side of the interior, put in place by BMW to validate the special edition status of both SUVs.
On the side of power, neither the X5 M Black Fire nor its X6 M counterpart are benefitted by power upgrades. Both the X5 M and the X6 M utilize the same 4.4-liter V-8 engine with an output of 567 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Still, these M-powered beasts are capable of accelerating to 62 mph from a standstill in just 4.2 seconds. Top speed for both models is electronically capped at 155 mph.
Pricing and availability for both Black Fire Editions have yet to be announced. We do know that updated versions of the X5 M and the X6 M are scheduled to hit the market in August with the X5 M retailing in the U.S. for $100,700 while the X6 M costing a little more at $104,500. Expect both the X5 M Black Fire Edition and the X6 M Black Fire Edition to carry price tags north of those respective figures. Hopefully, BMW also sends some models to the U.S., provided it has an idea on how many of these special edition units it plans to build in the future.
