Even we - car enthusiasts - must acknowledge that EVs are now part of automotive culture. Although there is still a debate around their sustainability or even the point of EVs in general, one aspect we can all agree on is the sound, or more specifically the lack thereof. BMW M has recognized that electrification has taken away an important aspect for the car enthusiast, so they have enlisted the help of legendary composer Hans Zimmer in order to try and create a thrilling futuristic sound for their first EV.

No one is having any illusions that an EV will sound as good as a V-8 or a V-12, but the i4 M50 promises to have its own unique soundtrack.} BMW M acknowledges that a car without a sound will not resonate with car enthusiasts. Because of this, they have resorted to bringing out the big guns in the sound industry.

They call it the “IconicSound Electric” and, since this is a German brand, it will be an optional extra for the i4. It will, however, be standard on the iX and the i4 M50, where the latter will have a more aggressive version of the sound.

Zimmer says that every BMW M-car has a unique character and it is reflected by the sound it makes. For this reason, they have developed a sound that accentuates the emotional driving experience “particularly vividly”. If you want to skip all the explanations, go to 1:35 and take a listen.
