Starting with the next generation 6-Series, BMW will be revising the M6 version and providing us with a new sports car that will draw its inspiration from the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept. This new vehicle will combine the Vision ED with better fuel economy and CO2 emissions while still allowing BMW to maintain M6 levels of power and performance. BMW will start testing this prototype later in the summer with hopes that it will provide good competition for the Audi R8 and the future baby SLS AMG.

The future car will be "a hi-tech sports car that showcases all of BMW’s eco-tech in the packaging of a performance car." While the concept is powered by a diesel-electric hybrid system, the production version will probably end up with a 4.4-liter V8 engine (the same engine that will be used in the next M5).

When talking about the future sports car, BMW R&D chief Klaus Draeger said that the future BMW supercar has to "be intelligent and dramatic-looking, something like the ED concept".
