Iconic and instantly recognizable as the BMW kidney grille may be, it has been growing and growing with recent models to the point where now it’s become too big on some models - yes, I’m looking at you, facelifted 7-Series sedan. But the refreshed 7-Series is not the only culprit here, because the new X7 is too, as well as the new X5 to a lesser degree.

It’s a trend that the Bavarian automaker will undoubtedly continue within the near future, especially for its larger and more opulent models, but I suggest a different, more tailored approach. How about offering, say, three sizes of grille that the owner can choose from based on how much of an extrovert the owner is.

That will make the car look quite a bit less conspicuous from the front, thus allowing its owner to pass by a bit more unnoticed (although that isn’t exactly easy in a 7-Series). The small grille option would suit those who really don’t like BMW’s new big grille ideas and would probably also make the car look a bit more friendly and less aggressive when you see it in your rearview.

In all fairness, though, the facelift (not including the gaping grille) does improve the look of the current 7-Series, a model nobody praises for being especially pretty. Courtesy of the refresh, though, it is certainly better to look at from most angles, but BMW really didn’t need to go crazy with the kidney grille just to assert its identity - it’s not like the car needed more air.
