Norbert Reithofer, BMW’s Chief Executive said that the group needs to build up its production volume in Spartanburg to roughly 200,000 units or more in the next two to three years to help hedge against currency fluctuations. Last year the maker built just 105.000 vehicles in Spartanburg. The company suffered losses of 666 million euros ($902 million) in 2006 and another 677 million in 2005, as a result.BMW sold 31,291 units of the X3 in the United States last year, compared to the 30,769 in 2005, and 114,000 units worldwide.
The ideea is very criticized since BMW is not fully utilising production capacity at its Leipzig plant, where it builds its mid-size 3 Series saloon and 1 Series hatchback.More info after the annual general meeting in Munich on Tuesday.
