The upcoming BMW X2->ke4064 is reportedly getting a Sport variant after reports surfaced that BMW->ke178 has registered the “X2 Sport” name in its latest trademark filling. A report from BMW Blog suggests that the trademark of the X2 Sport could be the long-awaited answer to questions about the available versions under the X2 name. With the X2 Sport now in play, it could be the strongest indication we have that BMW is planning to offer the X2 in three- and five-door configurations while still sharing its platform with the smaller X1.->ke2474

For my money, I think the X2 will be offered as the five-door version of the line with the X2 Sport being given the three-door version.

Either way, the two models are expected to be underpinned by the same ULK1 platform that’s currently used by the new MINI and the 2 Series Active Tourer.

BMW Blog is also reporting that the X2 Sport could feature a design inspired by BMW’s existing lineup of sports activity coupes, specifically the X4 and X6. Should that be the case, expect the X2 Sport to be more dynamic than the X1. A sloping roofline certainly isn’t out of the question since the X4->ke2999 and X6->ke2396 continue to carry that style. Larger kidney grilles and angular headlights should also be expected for the X2 and X2 Sport.

While BMW has yet to formally announce the arrival of the X2, the recent trademark filing of the "X2 Sport" name is the latest indication that we're going to see BMW's new sports activity coupe sooner rather than later.

The decision to trademark the X2 Sport is an important one for BMW, even if it hasn’t formally announced that it’s developing the model. It would’ve been embarrassing for the German brand if a trademark troll beat it to the punch and then held the name hostage in exchange for financial compensation.

Trademarking the name this early now allows the German automaker time to focus on actually building the crossover without having to worry about its name. Sometimes, it’s the little things like this that can make or break a brand. BMW addressed it early so it won't have to later on.

Why it matters

To be clear, there's still no specific timetable on when BMW plans to launch the X2. Numerous reports have said that a couple of variants could debut by 2017, but until BMW officially acknowledges it, we're all left with nothing more than speculation.

That being said, the X2 is a model that's all but certain to arrive in the next few years. The German automaker made sure to trademark the name back in June 2012, alongside names like the "i3," "i8," and "Wraith." All three names are now in production, including "Wraith," which is used by BMW subsidiary Rolls-Royce.

The X2, in particular, is expected to be packaged as the entry-level offering of Bimmer’s growing family of sports activity coupes, joining the X4 and the X6.

BMW is also reportedly using the same platform that currently underpins the Countryman and Paceman while also sharing the 2.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-four engine that both Minis and the BMW X1 use.

That engine is good for 240 horsepower and mates to an eight-speed automatic transmission. this drivetrain would make the X2 a potential rival to the Range Rover Evoque.
