BMW will unveil two concept cars at the Paris Motor Show in October: the X1 SUV and a a near-to-production version of the Mini SUV. The X1 goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2009. The Mini SUV will go on sale in the second quarter of 2010.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer announced last September that both models would go into production. The X1 is based on the 1-series entry premium sedan and will be built at BMW's Leipzig plant in eastern Germany. The Mini SUV will be outsourced to Austrian contract manufacturer Magna Steyr.

Both models will use engines existing in the 1 series and Mini models.

"The X1 will use the two highest spec gasoline and the two highest spec diesel engines from the 1 series. The Mini will use the engines from the Cooper S and the Cooper D," a source said.
