Mat Watson and his team from ‘Carwow’ arranged for a pretty cool race involving two German cars. On one side, we had the BMW X7 M50i, and on the other, the BMW iX 50. We’ve seen in the past that ICE cars and EVs from the same segment aren’t generally a good match as the EV is always quicker despite similar power outputs (instantaneous torque to the rescue!). But, these two SUVs seemed evenly poised and assured a race that wasn’t lopsided. The iX is expected to win, but not by huge margins. Do you think the X7 can score any wins here?

An eight-speed automatic gearbox powers all four wheels. It tips the scales at 5,490 pounds (2,490 kilos).

That’s quite closely matched to the X7 M50i. It’s the same story when it comes to weight as well. Despite the motors, battery, etc., the iX weighs 5,556 pounds (2,520 kilos), just 66 pounds (30 kilos) heavier than the X7.

How Did The Races Go?

Both the SUVs got good starts and were neck-and-neck for a few seconds. The iX slowly started edging the X7 M50i, thus getting a win over its internal combustion-engined counterpart. The BMW iX completed the standing quarter-mile in 13 seconds, whereas the X7 took two-tenth of a second more.

Next up was a rolling race from 50 mph with the X7 in Sport+ mode for the gearbox. The iX, as expected, had a better kickdown and kept going. It comfortably beat the X7 at the half-mile, but then it hit its top speed of 125 mph, which allowed the X7 to overtake it and win the race at the mile mark. The X7, by the way, tops out at 155 mph.

They took part in another rolling race, but with the X7’s gearbox in manual mode. We know what the end result will be, but it’ll be an interesting test to see if the X7 can overtake the iX before the latter hit its top speed. As it turns out, it couldn’t. The iX zoomed past yet again despite the X7’s best efforts. The latter had to wait for the iX to top out before sprinting past it. Mat raced the iX again, this time from 30 mph and in second gear. However, it made no difference whatsoever and it seemed like a replay of the previous races.

The final round was a brake test from 100 mph. Despite being a tad bit heavier, the iX managed to stop in a shorter distance. Perhaps, it was the regen that also came into effect here for the iX. Either way, a not-so-lopsided series of races here. Watch the video right here and let us know in the comments section.
