Not bad for an open-top sports machine!

We got an eye-full of the new BMW Z4 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering last month during Monterey Car Week, and while it was great to see the Bavarian’s latest creation parked, we didn’t get a chance to see it in motion. Now, we have an in-depth look at the Z4’s dynamic capability, as it just went less than 8 minutes at the ‘Ring.

The Full Story

This latest bit of performance fun comes from the 9-minute, 45-second video featured above, which comes to us courtesy of our friends from Sport Auto.

The video opens with some nice establishing shots of the Green Hell, after which we get the lowdown on the car’s specs - turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine producing 340 PS (335 horsepower) and 500 Nm (369 pound-feet) of torque, which hits the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Properly motivated, the new Z4 will sprint to 62 mph in roughly 4.6 seconds.

This particular run was done on Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, a totally reasonable compound for a sporty street car. The rubber was wrapped on 19-inch wheels and sized at 255/35 in front and 275/35 in the rear.

The convertible making the run is wrapped in a swirly camo cover, although we have plenty of pictures of it in its full glory right here if you’re interested.

Included in the video is a slew of glory shots, followed by revs and other hyper-builders. Then the car takes to the track and starts putting down some times, transitioning the video to an in-car angle complete with data on the car’s speed, g-levels (lateral and longitudinal), and elapsed time.

The driver (professional racer Christian Gebhardt) is clearly quite talented, and really pushes the car to the ragged edge around the technical and treacherous German race track.

One of the more interesting bits is toward the end, where the Z4 hits 260 km/h (161.6 mph) down the long straight.

Although the Z4’s time of 7 minutes, 55 seconds is a bit slower than the Porsche 718 Cayman S, which ran a 7:46.7 back in 2016, it’s still very impressive all the same.
