Lamborghini’s a marque that has never had a use for subtlety. As a lifelong creator of the sorts of cars that look more at home on posters than on the street, it’s surprising to think that it’s been in the supercar business for 50 years now. A new book from Motorbooks brings that history to life. Lamborghini Supercars 50 Years is available now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other outlets.

The exotic lines of Lamborghini’s parade of dream-car sheet metal are expertly captured by automotive photographer James Mann, while Stuart Codling provides the backstory. It’s fitting material for a coffee table book, and this handsomely bound volume was designed to be just that. It’s a walk through Lamborghini’s supercars from the beginning, from the Miura up through the Huracan, including specifications and a behind-the-scenes look at the design and production of Lamborghini’s most iconic models.

It’s a tale spanning of 50 years of constant one-upmanship, in which each successive Lamborghini aims farther, faster and more extreme than its predecessor. In addition to being a parade of fine photographs of beautiful cars, Lamborghini Supercars 50 Years provides technical details of the many variants of each model, and background information about the men who designed and engineered them.

Why it matters

The book covers all of the supercars to wear the Raging Bull badge, so it reads like a listing of Lamborghini’s greatest hits: the Miura, Countach, Diablo, Murcielago, Gallardo, Reventon, Aventador, Sesto Elemento and Huracan are all covered in depth. Codling does a good job of giving the reader a sense of the time that each of these cars was born into, with information about the contemporary automotive landscape and competitors as well as Lamborghini’s intent and marketing.

Mann is a renowned automotive photographer, and his work’s familiar to readers of Classic and Sports Car, CAR Magazine, Forza, and Automobile Magazine. This is his fourth book for Motorbooks. Codling’s credentials include over a decade of motorsports writing (including on-track time and behind-the-scenes confrontations with the drivers) for F1 Racing, Autosport and Autocar.
