Hot on the heels of its unveiling at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Brabham BT62 will be making the trip across the Atlantic to have its North American debut during Monterey Car Week in California. The 700-horsepower, track-only supercar will be on display at the Michelin stand at Laguna Seca before making appearances at McCall’s Motorworks Revival and the Exotics on Cannery Row.

It’s been a while since Brabham was as relevant as it is these days. That’s partly due to the company being out of sight and out of mind for more than 20 years before returning as a racing outfit in 2014. But Brabham has definitely made up for lost time with the arrival of the BT62. It first showed up at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it attracted attention like few supercars in the event could.

With that successful debut behind it, the Brabham BT62 is being shipped off to California so it could get some much-needed face time with an audience that probably doesn’t know the company’s history as well as the folks over in Europe do. The Brabham BT62 is a great introductory car to help in that regard. The model that will be appearing at Monterey Car Week is even dressing up in a special livery that pays homage to Dan Gurney, the first racer to win a Formula One Grand Prix race while driving a Brabham race car. That historic victory took place in the 1964 French Grand Prix. That car wore a green body paint with matching gold accents and a round “12” race number decal. This is the same design treatment the California-bound BT62 is going to have. At the very least, the BT62 is going to get noticed. At best, enough people will see it and suddenly find the urge to have one in their garages.

If the latter ends up being the case, these folks will have to pay $1.3 million for the track-focused, 700 horsepower, beast of a car. It may seem like a steep price for a model that doesn’t carry the same level of prestige as other brands with models that are priced similarly, but that’s the price you’re going to have to pay to be part of an exclusive club of just 70 owners. That’s also the price one North American individual paid for the car. The identity of the individual wasn’t revealed, but it is believed that he’s the first person from this region to sign up for a BT62.

For $1.3 million, prospective customers will receive an aggressively designed track racer with a full carbon fiber body that helps it weigh just 972 kilos. Combine that with its plethora of aerodynamic components and a mid-mounted 5.4-liter V-8 engine that produces 700 horsepower and 492 pound-feet of torque, and you have a car that has as much as 1,200 kilos — 2,645 pounds — of downforce at its disposal.
