The Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance always attracts its share of exotics and exclusive models. It won’t be different in this year’s event as Bugatti has confirmed the attendance of its new Chiron hypercar and the Vision Grand Turismo show car at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering event.

The part about both cars attending isn’t exactly the big deal here. After all, both the Chiron and the VGT show car have already made their respective world debuts. That said, this will be the first time that the show car will be displayed in the United States and having it sit beside the car that it had a hand in inspiring from a design point of view adds to the appeal of having both of them at Pebble Beach.

In the Instagram post touting the cars’ participation at Pebble Beach, Bugatti also indicated that the two cars that will be at Pebble Beach already has an owner, which the company identified by his Instagram handle, @b14. But according to Auto Evolution, the account and more importantly, the Chiron and the VGT show car are owned by no less than Prince Badr bin Saud, the grandson of the late King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. Bugatti didn’t say how much the prince bought the two cars for, but it did say that he had “submitted the most convincing bid.” In other words, it had a lot of zeroes in it.

Why it matters

I don’t want to come across as someone who’s reeking of envy but it’s hard not to feel any differently when you see someone being able to buy a Bugatti Chiron and the company’s Vision Gran Turismo show car. I can’t even begin to imagine how much it took to buy that car. $4 million? $5 million? Whatever that number is, it didn’t come cheap considering the rarity - it’s literally a one-off - of the show car.

I am excited to see both cars at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Typically, there’s an unwritten competition among automakers who go to the event to steal the show. That’s how far it’s always been at the event and it’s not going to be any different now. I just think that it’s going to be very difficult for other companies to top what Bugatti’s planning to show. The Chiron itself is a show stopper. Same thing with the Vision Gran Turismo show car. Now put them together, side-by-side? That’s the kind of thing that makes the knees of grown men buckle.

If Prince Badr bin Saud really is the owner of these two incredible Bugattis, I sincerely hope that he enjoys every bit of the amount of he paid for it. Rare is the day when you can own two cars that you can call the crown jewels of your collection. I'm sure the prince feels the same way so let's hope he makes the most out of them.
