Bugatti is about to unveil a new supercar, but what is it?

Bugatti is preparing to unveil a brand-new vehicle. The French company just posted a teaser photo on its social media accounts. The picture shows four red LED bars arranged like a flattened letter X and comes with the caption "What if...?" The mysterious teaser confirms previous rumors that Bugatti will reveal a new car in October 2020. But what is it?

Is this a new one-off, track-day supercar?

The teaser doesn’t provide too many hints beyond the X-shaped LED bars. These could be taillight bars, but they’re placement would be different compared to other Bugatti models. Logic suggests that the upper bars are placed on what should be the defining lines of a massive spoiler or retractable wing. The lower bars would be placed on the upper section of a big diffuser. This scenario leads us to believe that we might be looking at the rumored track-day special powered by the 8.0-liter W-16 in the Centodieci and Chiron Super Sport 300+. This 1,578-horsepower hypercar would be a one-off.

The Volkswagen Group is currently evaluating the future of exclusive and expensive brands like Bugatti and word has it the French firm could be sold off to Rimac. The transfer would be part of a deal through which Porsche gains a bigger stake in the Croatian automaker and access to its high-performance electric powertrains. Bugatti is also said to go fully electric under Rimac and recent rumors suggest that the October 2020 unveiling will include an EV. Likely inspired by the Vision Le Mans concept, it would also be a one-off model. The Rimac-sourced electric powertrain would deliver close to 2,000 horsepower and would be used as a test bed for future electric Bugatti supercars.

Could it be another Chiron-based model?

Earlier in 2020 we heard rumors that Bugatti is planning to build a roadster version of the Chiron. A one-off car with a special roof, the Chiron Roadster would be built for a client that paid around $11 million. However, the X-shaped headlamps look nothing like the Chiron’s, so it’s very unlikely that the teaser is for this car. Unless Bugatti photographed a different part of the car that includes some sort of unique feature.

Either way, we should find out what this new Bugatti is later this month, so stay tuned for more information.
