To the surprise of absolutely no one, it’s an electric SUV concept

Buick is continuing its brand revival with a new concept vehicle that’s scheduled to debut at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show in April. The concept, called the Enspire, is the latest model to showcase General Motors’ plans for Buick moving forward. Its China debut also isn’t by accident; the General has been excessively aggressive in establishing the Buick brand in China, a country where the automaker sells most of its models.

A Buick concept making its debut in China? Don’t be surprised because that’s how important of a market China is for the American automaker. Consider this: Buick sold 1.2 million units in China in 2017. That’s six times more than the 220,000 vehicles it sold in the U.S. in the same period.

So yeah, Buick’s a pretty big deal in China. That’s one of the reasons why the automaker is bringing the Enspire Concept there instead of having its debut at the New York Auto Show last month.

Details about the electric SUV concept are still being kept under wraps, but Buick did drop a teaser of the Inspire, to go with a statement describing it as “an exploration of design and new technologies” that will help leverage the automaker’s resources as an “application of future electric smart mobility.”

We also get a teaser image of the concept’s rear section, which shows a raked rear windscreen, a curved body, and dynamic taillights that run the whole width of the SUV. If that kind of design looks familiar, it’s because a lot of concepts have adopted it recently, including the Volkswagen Cross Sport Concept that just made its debut in New York last March. Could this be just a fad or is this the next evolution of styling headlights and taillights?

We don’t know much else about the concept, including the specific kind of powertrain it’s going to carry. We do know that given’s Buick brief description, the answer is an all-electric powertrain. Likewise, the concept should feature some kind of autonomous driving capability.

The Buick Enspire Concept will debut at a dedicated Buick Brand Night even in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, on April 17, before heading to the Beijing Auto Show.
