The Transformers movie franchise is in serious need of a spark after the last three movies bombed their way into obscurity. Paramount Pictures appears to be doing just that by taking a different approach to the next movie. No longer will we see the Autobots fight the Deceptions for what feels like the millionth time. Instead, we’re getting an origin story that takes us back to 1987. The star of the movie? None other than Bumblebee.

I’ll be the first to admit that I lost interest in the Transformers franchise after Dark of the Moon (third movie). I barely got through Age of Extinction (fourth movie) and didn’t even bother to watch The Last Knight (fifth movie). That’s how bad the franchise has gotten.

That said, I am mildly intrigued about Bumblebee: The Origin Story. First, it’s a different approach to what the franchise has done recently. Second, it focuses on probably the only character that fans still care about. Third, it stars Haley Steinfeld, an actress who I’m actually pretty fond of. Having John Cena in the mix also helps because he’s John Cena.

Best of all, we’re seeing Bumblebee in a completely different light. He’s not going to be dressed up as a Chevrolet Camaro; he'll be a yellow Volkswagen Beetle. It’s a departure from what we’ve known in the movie franchise, but fans of the cartoons will appreciate it because Bumblebee was a Beetle in the cartoons.

As far as the plot goes, there’s not a lot that we know at this point. It has been reported that Steinfeld will play Charlie, a 17-year old who discovers the yellow Bug and “restores” it. There’s been no mention of Decepticon characters in the movie, but that’s not too much of an issue at this point. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2018, so there’s still enough time to learn more about it.

The movie looks promising, that much I’m willing to admit. Let’s see if it ends up being better than expected.
