The Cadillac CT6 is the new, rear-wheel-drive flagship model from the brand, and like all modern flagship models these days, it appears that GM is eyeballing a hybrid->ke147 drivetrain for the engine bay. The information comes from a report by GM Authority that references a special private event to show new models to the company’s investors. GM’s president of global product development was on hand and if the piece is to be believed, he was quick to spill the details of the car’s new powertrain.

It seems that Cadillac’s->ke18 newest car will feature a plug-in hybrid system that would be comparable to what Porsche->ke1 currently sells in the Panamera S E-Hybrid. The details include being able to move at speeds of up to 75 mph on pure battery power, and a 0-to-60-mph acceleration time of less than six seconds. There is no talk of horsepower numbers, but I would expect to see at least a combined 375- to 400-horsepower rating.

It is important to note that the report specifically uses the word “option” when discussing the hybrid drivetrain, so if you prefer your large sedans with only petrol power it appears that Cadillac still wants to appease you and your preferences. Along with the “option” hybrid, expect higher-performance variants to arrive as well.

Why It Matters

Emissions and CAFE ratings are more important now than at almost any other time in the history of the automobile. If Cadillac wants to sell a high-end luxury sedan, it needs to offer a hybrid drivetrain to both woo over the ecologically conscious, wealthy members of society as well as maintain compliance with government fuel-economy regulations. A diesel engine could be another option for Cadillac, but the short-revving and toruqey nature of a diesel does not lend itself well to a luxury car of the caliber that the CT6 is aiming for.
