Auto journalist Misha Charoudin believes that the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo is not only capable of beating the all-time lap record at the Nurburgring, but with the help of a few calculations, it can actually destroy the record. The auto scribe was at the Nurburgring a few days ago at the same time as the 919 Hybrid Evo, and he was able to see up-close exactly what the record-breaking racer is capable of. With the data that he gathered, combined with a few mathematical computations, Charoudin asserts that in ideal track conditions, the 919 Hybrid Evo would be capable of posting a lap time of under five minutes.

Are you prepared to get your minds blown? Watch the video of Misha Charoudin talking about the Porsche 919 Evo’s potential Nurburgring lap time, and you might walk out of it with your jaws on the floor.

While Charoudin admits that his methods can’t predict lap times to the tenths of seconds, he did say that he’s gotten close with his predictions on a handful of occasions. To prove the validity of his methods, Charoudin and some of his friends went to the Nurburgring on the same day the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo was on the track. After a few hours of gathering information, Charoudin was able to use the information he was hearing from track officials who were checking in from certain locations in the track when the 919 Evo passed their sections. With those details, the journo was able to calculate the section times of the 919 Evo, compare them to the times posted by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, the current lap record-holder among production cars, and use higher forms of mathematics to determine the expected lap time of the 919 Hybrid Evo.

If this is your kind of thing, the results that Charoudin received suggested that the 919 Evo could lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife in just a little over five minutes. Even more impressive? It could post a staggering lap time of 4:51 if everything breaks perfectly.

By comparison, the current record lap held by Stefan Bellof and his Porsche 965 sits at 6:11.3. If Charoudin’s calculations are even removed close to what the 919 Hybrid Evo is capable of, it could destroy the 35-year old record by over one minute. That’s beyond astounding to the point that it doesn’t seem conceivable.

But as it is, the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo has already broken a number of track records, most recently destroying the lap record at Spa Francorchamps a few months ago when it posted a lap time of 1:41.770, beating out the previous record held by Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton.

We won’t know until later this year if the 919 Hybrid Evo is really capable of slaying the long-standing Nurburgring record, but we’re going to see plenty of the racer in the coming months as it is scheduled to be in attendance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, the Festival of Porsche at Brands Hatch on September 2, and the Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Laguna SECA from September 26 to 29. The lap records in those courses don’t appear to be long for the world.
