Can The Toyota GR Supra Shame The Mercedes-AMG C63 S In A Drag Race?

The Toyota GR Supra is known to punch above its weight, but the Mercedes AMG C63 S packs a lot of grunt - will it prove too much for the Supra?

Lately, it seems like it’s Toyota GR Supra against the world, as the car is constantly being pitted against other, more powerful vehicles. What’s impressive is that the Supra tends to come out on top, even when pitted against V-8-powered vehicles. Speaking of V-8s, YouTube channel Sam CarLegion has managed to secure a Mercedes AMG C63 S Coupe in order to go up against the GR Supra. Will it win or will it become part of the statistics?

In the previous race, the GR Supra went up against a more powerful, but heavier Mustang GT Convertible and won. But the Mercedes AMG C63 S is even more powerful and actually lighter than that Mustang.

The AMG C63 S redeems itself in the rolling race
From a 31 mph roll-out, the "Merc" manages to put all 503 hp to good use, securing a win

That said, the Mercedes still weighs a hefty 4,094 pounds (1,857 kg).

On the other hand, it has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that makes 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Nm).

Power goes to the rear wheels through a nine-speed automatic.

The Toyota GR Supra is, once again, the lighter competitor at 3,304 pounds (1,499 kg).

Its 3.0-liter inline-six features a twin-scroll turbocharger and makes 382 horsepower (or so they say) and 368 pound-feet (499 Nm).

Power is sent to the rear axle through a ZF eight-speed automatic.

The two cars do a total of five races – four from a dig and one from a 50 km/h (31 mph) roll. Customary to the channel, the first runs are in normal mode. Mercedes slept on the first start, giving the Supra an easy win (stay focused Sam). For the second race, Sam manages to react on time, but the featherweight GR Supra still manages to pull ahead.

The lighter Supra puts the power down better
This results in it being consistently quicker than the Merc over the 1/4-mile

Things aren’t much different in sport mode, as the Supra just rockets off the line. The more powerful AMG C63 S closes in fast at the second half of the quarter-mile, but it’s too late. The rolling race is the only one done with traction control off. The Mercedes easily takes the win here, but according to Sam “the Supra isn’t that far off”.

But it was closer than you think
Even Sam was surprised at how well the Supra kept up in the rolling race

The moral of the story is that if you want an early lead, you need a lighter car. And we also confirmed, once again, that the Supra is insanely capable pound for pound.

In sport mode the Mercedes wakes up
However, that doesn’t stop the Supra from winning again

After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
