The Chinese car market is one of the biggest and most important in the world, which is why most manufacturers strive to establish a strong foothold there. It’s not just the sheer size of the market, but also the cost-cutting opportunities that come with having a production plant on the territory. In recent years, however, the Chinese automotive industry has taken a big leap and although they still have ways to go, Chinese car manufacturers are already offering some pretty attractive ideas, at least as far as their own market goes. The Hongqi H9 is one such car.

The YouTube channel Wheelsboy is a very informative channel, in that it offers an insight into the Chinese automotive market. It’s been doing so for over 20 years and now they have their hands on what looks like a Chinese alternative to the likes of Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series.

The Hongqi H9 is a full-size executive saloon the design of which has drawn heavy inspiration by BMW 7-Series, Mercedes S-Class, and the Rolls Royce Ghost. The latter is not really a surprise given the fact they’ve hired Jylce Taylor – the former Rolls Royce head of design – back in 2018. Although the design is not his – credit goes to a Chinese designer working for Hongqi, Taylor’s input was still valued, which led to some very recognizable design elements.

The car itself wants to be an old-school luxury cruiser. The chassis favors smooth driving rather than being tossed around in a series of hairpins and that’s a good thing since this is what executive saloons are all about. Watch the video, to see why the Hongqi H9 might be better than you think.

Born in 1992, I come from a family of motoring enthusiasts. My passion for cars was awoken at the age of six, when I saw a Lamborghini Diablo SV in a magazine. After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
