Forget about the Mazda MX-5 Miata, this mid-engined Toyota MR2 is a tasteful classic

The Mazda Miata MX-5 may be the world’s finest example when it comes to lightweight and affordable sports cars, but it wasn’t the first nameplate to introduce this idea. When Mazda was rolling out the first-gen MX-5 in 1989, Toyota was already selling the MR2 for five years. The nameplate was discontinued back in 2007, but it’s still a cool car to have, especially since it features a mid-mounted engine. If you’re a fan of the MR2, this mint-condition model from 1986 might tickle your fancy.

Recently listed on Bring a Trailer, this MR2 is not just a 34-old classic, it’s also a stunningly clean example with just 22,000 miles on the odometer. It was first registered in Ohio and spent most of its life in the Michigan area before being purchased by the seller in 2016.

It's powered by the original 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine which used to pump 116 horsepower and 102 pound-feet of torque when new.

While it’s not the 145-horsepower, supercharged engine that Toyota brought to the U.S. in 1988, it’s still enough to have fun, as the MR2 tips the scales at only 2,300 pounds.

Finished in a black coat of paint that hasn’t lost much of its luster, this MR2 is equipped with 14-inch wheels, extended side skirts, a removable pop-up roof, and Toyota decals. Inside the cabin you’ll find the original two-spoke steering wheel and adjustable seats wrapped in black leather, as well as electric windows and locks, A/C, cruise control, and a factory cassette stereo.

The MR2 comes with a clean Carfax report, a clean Indiana title in the seller’s name, period literature, and proof of a photo shoot that appeared in the September 2020 issue of Car and Driver magazine. The owner replaced the original exhaust system with one from HKS, but the original component will be offered with the car. The timing belt and water pump were replaced in 2017 at 21,000, while the latest oil and filter change date back to May 2020.

The 1986 Toyota MR2 is sold at auction and the current bid is at $8,000. The auction ends in six days, so you have until October 19 to bid and take it home.

The first-generation Toyota MR2, also known as the W10, was built from 1984 to 1989. The MR2 was redesigned in 1989 and then in 1999, before being discontinued in 2007. Rumors of a revival have been flying around since 2007, but Toyota currently only offers front-engined sports cars like the Supra, 86, and Copen GR Sport.
