BMW has yet to introduce the next-generation M4, but it's already working on a beefed-up version of the upcoming coupe. Our paparazzi just sent us a couple of photos showing a camouflaged BMW M4 that looks notably different than the production model that will debut later this year. Specifically, it features a center-mounted exhaust system and, more importantly, a rear wing. This can only mean one thing: we're looking at the upcoming BMW M4 GTS.

What will the New BMW M4 GTS badge bring to the table?

It will feature a bigger splitter at the bottom of the front bumper, slightly wider fenders, a rear wing atop the rear deck, and center-mounted exhaust pipes. It will also sport a more aggressive rear diffuser and some unique trim.

Beyond what we can already see, the GTS will come with a pair of race-inspired seats in the front and a unique setup for the infotainment and instrument cluster displays. It will also feature more carbon-fiber and CFRP components inside and out in order to shed some 50 or 60 pounds compared to the regular M4. It will also be notably more powerful than the regular production M4.

The upcoming BMW M4 GTS will boast more than 500 horsepower

The previous M4 GTS was launched in 2016, and it wasn't around for long, as production was limited to just 700 units. The GTS was powered by a beefed-up version of the twin-turbo, inline-six engine BMW was using in the M3 and M4 back then. The powerplant was rated at 493 horsepower, which makes it the most potent version of the previous-gen M4. For reference, the M4 came with 425 horses, the M4 Competition offered 444 horsepower, while the M4 CS boasts 453 horses.

So how do we know how much power the new GTS will have?

Well, BMW might not have revealed the new-generation M4, but we know that it will be sold in two flavors. There will be a base M4 with 473 horsepower and an M4 Competition model with 503 horses. Both powered by BMW's latest twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The M4 GTS will feature the same mill, but with revised internals and some extra tech. In order to keep it as a range-topping model, BMW will have to put it above the M4 Competition in terms of power and torque. This means that the beefed-up coupe could arrive with a whopping 540 horses on tap.

When will the new BMW M4 GTS debut?

The standard M4 is not yet available, but we should see it break cover by the end of 2020. This means that the M4 GTS could debut sometime in the second half of 2021. This also means that it will be sold in the United States for the 2022 model year. Just like its predecessor, the new M4 GTS will be limited to fewer than 1,000 units. It will also be significantly more expensive than the regular M4, meaning that it will cost well in excess of $100,000.
