Ever since the Dodge Viper Time Attack smashed the Corvette ZR1’s lap record at Laguna Seca, GM enthusiasts have been waiting for a new supercharged Vette to put bowtie-badged sports car atop Chrysler’s V-10-powered Snake once again. With the 650-horsepower Z06 already in dealerships as of December 2015, it seemed Corvette gearheads finally had the tool to beat the Viper. All we had to do is wait for someone to bring the two together for a comparison to find out which is faster. Well, the first video just hit the Interwebz and things don’t look good for Chevy’s new race-bred Z06.

The folks over at ThatRacingChannel just released a video in which a 2015 Corvette Z06 with the seven-speed manual transmission is put to test against a 2014 Dodge Viper TA. Both cars are bone stock and only 700 miles and 1,700 miles on their odometers, respectively. The drivers did multiple runs, including 20-to-140 mph from second to fourth gear, 60-to-155 mph from second to fifth, as well as a 0-to-155-mph sprint from first to fifth gear. Although the Z06 manages to sneak in front at times, the Viper goes on to win the battles, an unexpected and certainly upsetting result for Corvette fans.

How is this possible? Well, we don’t have all the details about the specifics of this rather illegal duel or the skills of the two drivers, but it may have something to do with the fact that the Viper is about 140 pounds lighter than the Z06. Sure, the latter comes with an extra 10 ponies and 50 pound-feet of torque, but the Snake’s aerodynamic package could’ve played a key role in this drag race. Of course, this duel isn’t exactly relevant, but until a proper comparison is made, the supercharged Z06 has to live with the idea that it has been defeated by its older, all-motor competitor. Suddenly, "there’s no replacement for displacement" sounds downright accurate.
