Chevrolet is here with a versatile tailgate of its own called the Multi-Flex tailgate. As expected, it is carried over as it is from the GMC trucks and given a new name. These tailgates certainly have an extra advantage over the simple ones that don’t offer any other function except for opening and closing. However, the Multi-Flex tailgate wasn’t the only news here; the 2021 models will come with some new standard features and better tow ratings.

Multi-Flex Tailgate Will Add Extra Utility

Apart from opening as a conventional tailgate, it can work as a standing desk or can be folded down to create a step in the bed as well. While it isn’t the barn-door style gate Ram has, it still essentially is a two-tailgate setup. It can be activated at a push of a button on the tailgate itself – one for each gate – or the key fob. It also has a primary gate and inner gate load stops.

It gets even better when combined with the Durabed that features better cargo space, LED lighting, a 120-volt outlet, and 12 fixed tie-downs.

What Else Is New On The 2021 Silverado 1500?

The towing capacity is increased on every configuration. The Crew Cab Short Box models equipped with the 2.7-liter engine see an increase of 2,500 pounds and now come with a maximum rating of 9,300 pounds in the two-wheel-drive layout. The Long Box model with the same engine can tow up to 9,600 pounds and haul up to 2,280 pounds when powering just two wheels.

This means the two-wheel-drive configuration trucks can now tow up to 9,500 pounds. To make this deal even sweeter, all models powered by this engine receive a price cut of $1,500.

Some other stuff that’s new on the 2021 model year trucks include:

-* Trailer length indicator that shows an overlay of the truck and two-lengths of the trailer on the center console screen when changing lanes.

-* Jack-knife alert

-* Cargo Bed Zoom View and Bed Hitch Guidance

-* Rear trailer view and rear side view

-* Three new exterior colors – Mosaic Black Metallic, Oxford Brown Metallic, Cherry Red Tincoat

-* New packages - All-Star Edition Plus, Texas Edition Plus, and LTZ Premium Texas Edition

-* Some features that were optional on the 2020 model are now standard on a few trims for the 2021 model Silverados

Final Thoughts

We aren’t complaining really, but if GM had to equip the same tailgate without any changes really, why did it have to wait till the 2021 model? Anyway, now that it’s here, people planning to buy the truck in the coming months will be happy. Production of the 2021 Silverado 1500 will begin this month and will arrive at the dealerships in the fall of this year.

Do you think GM should’ve increased the weight capacity of this tailgate, considering Ram’s MultiFunction tailgate can withstand up to 2,000 pounds? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
