Things... They are a changin

The automotive market has changed so much over the last 15 years, and its constant evolution is taking us to places we never expected and showing us things we never thought we’d see. After Ford and Chevy integrated modern four-cylinder engines into the Mustang and Camaro, it was only a matter of time before the led to even stranger things, and in this case, that’s a four-cylinder Silverado. Chevy has announced that the 2019 Chevy Silverado will be offered with a 2.7-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder. In fact, it’s not only offering it but listing it as standard equipment on the entry-level LT and the RST. Both come exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

I assure you, folks – this isn’t a joke. If you want a 2019 Silverado LT or RST, you’ll find a 2.7-liter four-banger under the hood. For what it’s worth, it’s not exactly a slouch. That engine is able to deliver 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. It also has active fuel management and stop\start technology to make it as efficient as possible. This engine replaced the 4.3-liter as the entry-level engine on these trim levels, and the 4.3 won’t even be offered as an option for them. If you want the tried and true 4.3-liter, you’ll need to step up to the Silverado WT, Silverado Custom, or Silverado Custom Trail Boss. As far as the LT and RST go, they can be optioned with the 5.3-liter V-8 or that new 3.0-liter I-6 diesel.

As the lineup stands right now, the 4.3-liter will only be available on the WT, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss. The 2.7-liter is only offered on the LT and RST, the 5.3-liter with a six-speed is only available as an option on the WT, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss. The 5.3-liter with an eight-speed auto is standard on the LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country. It can be optioned on the LT and RST, though. The Inline-six diesel is only offered as an option, and you can get it on the LT, RST, LTZ, or High Country. Finally, Chevy is sticking with that big 6.2-liter V-8 and 10-speed auto, but it’s only available as an option in the LTZ and High Country.

With this in mind, it should be noted that Chevy went above and beyond when it came to revamping the Silverado lineup. Not only does it get that new diesel, but it’s also lighter and more aerodynamic than ever. It’s packed to the brim with technology in higher trim levels, and It’s even bigger and lighter, with certain models featuring 3.9-inches of extra wheelbase and shedding as much as 450 pounds over the current model.
