Following months of rumors and teasers, BMW finally revealed some details about the upcoming 8 Series. While the M8 remains a mystery, now we know a bit more about the M850i versions, which promises to deliver in excess of 500 horsepower.

Not surprisingly, the said model will use a V-8 engine. BMW didn't say a word about displacement but did mention that it's a "completely redeveloped" engine, which means that it's probably based on the familiar 4.4-liter unit. The revised engine will crank out 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of twist in the M850i, a model that will also feature the xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard. The eight-speed Steptronic transmission for this coupe was also redeveloped for shorter shift times.

The all-wheel drive system will be biased toward the rear where there is an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. The electronically adjustable suspension with active roll stabilization will give the 8 Series the dynamics that high-performance Bimmers are known for. The drivers will have access to three modes, starting with Normal, which will deliver comfortable cruising. The Sport setup will probably switch the engine and transmission into a more aggressive mode, while Sport+ will take the M850i close to racing territory.

The M850i will be joined by a full-fledged M8 variant, so expect an even more powerful coupe, likely with at least 600 horsepower. A milder car with better fuel efficiency is also on the table. Chances are it will be called the 840i and will use a six-cylinder engine, but BMW is still mum on the details. The 8 Series is supposed to go on sale later this year, so we should find out more in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates.
