Refreshing the Caddy lineup

Cadillac has announced it will reposition the recently revealed CT6 V-Sport as an actual V-branded model. That’s all well and good, but it apparently entails waving goodbye to the excellent ATS-V and CTS-V performance sedans. Both will be taken out of production by the spring of 2019, and in their place will be the CT6-V, once more performance bits are added on.

Both the ATS-V and CTS-V are excellent in their own right, with the former giving more established small executive sedan-based performance models a run for their money, and the latter packing a strong 640-horsepower supercharged V-8 and many likable qualities.

The ATS-V is offered with a manual six-speed gearbox, as was the previous (and much loved) CTS-V.

The ATS-V was also the first V-branded modern Cadillac and the model that put the brand on the performance car map, as well as help Caddy shed its image as a maker of staid, floaty cars for retirees.

Some reviewers who drove the smaller ATS-V back to back against established European rivals said it was the best handling of them all - a surprising distinction for a car bearing the Wreath and Crest badge.

The original CTS-V was also offered as a more practical (and some may say cooler) wagon variant which further cemented its place in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts. That version has future classic written all over it, especially since it’s not going to get a follow-up model.

Cadillac insists that this announcement is a positive one as the CT6-V signals the expansion of its V-Series performance sub-brand across its range (which includes high-riding crossovers and SUVs). The CT6-V will be powered by a new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine dubbed “Blackwing,” which in the recently revealed V-Sport pumps out an estimated 550 horsepower. Its only transmission option will be a new 10-speed automatic, and it is set to debut around the same time the two former V-branded models will be killed off.
