Czech Millionaire Does 259 MPH With Bugatti Chiron At Autobahn, But German Authorities Aren’t Happy

It’s still a public road, after all

LISTEN 02:52

The Bugatti Chiron is a hypercar that, in all honesty, has more performance than anyone will ever be capable of fully extracting in any public road around the world. Yet a Czech millionaire named Radim Passer tried to do such a stunt with his Chiron at the German Autobahn.

Two videos were published just recently—one that’s edited and another one containing raw GoPro footage of the top speed run. Either way, the actual attempt was conducted in July of last year, and it took place at a 6-mile (10 kilometers) and three-lane-wide section of the Autobahn that was completely straight and unrestricted.

The Bugatti Chiron was able to hit 259 mph (417 km/h), which is just 2 mph (3 km/h) shy of the hypercar’s electronically-limited top speed. Passer said in the video caption that safety was a priority in doing the top speed run:

The section of the A2 was a 3 lane, 10 km straightaway with a light descent in the middle, so there was visibility along the whole stretch. Safety was a priority, so the circumstances had to be safe to go.

It’s an amazing feat, for sure, but it’s one that the German Transport Ministry was not happy about according to the Associated Press.. While most sections of the Autobahn are unrestricted, it is not an incentive for road users to endanger other motorists with such stunts.

“All road users must abide by the rules of the road traffic regulations,” citing the first clause of Germany’s road traffic law, which states that “anyone participating in traffic must behave in such a way that no other person is harmed, endangered or obstructed or inconvenienced more than is unavoidable under the circumstances.”

The Bugatti Chiron for reference has an 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W-16 engine that produces 1,184 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. This enables it to reach an electronically-limited top speed of 261 mph, while the 0-60 mph run happens in just 2.3 seconds.

Other vehicles recently have also tried to push their limits at the Autobahn. Just recently, a current-generation Bentley Continental GT was able to keep up with much faster supercars, while a 2007 model year Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 recently tried to hit its top speed in a brutal fashion. None, however, were powerful and fast enough to prove controversial to the German authorities.
