DeLorean has been teasing a comeback for quite some time now. The company announced its intentions back in February, and made sure to come back as an EV-maker to future-proof itself from another extinction. Fast forward to the present day, its first product as a reinvigorated brand is finally here. Called the Alpha5, this EV comes with a 300-mile range, a 0-60 mph time of 2.99 seconds, and most importantly, the iconic oh-so-good look inspiration from its predecessor, the DMC-12. Now that the latest DeLorean creation is here, can we have another iteration of the 'Back To The Future'?

This DeLorean Can't Time-Travel, but it Looks Retro-Futuristic

The DeLorean Alpha5 will be a hot performance EV with inspiration from the classic DMC-12. We had seen a few teasers here and there and even some renderings in the last few months, but now we have the real deal.

The highlight on the outside is definitely that pair of massive gullwing doors by ItalDesign. The headlights and taillights come in the form of slim bars that are on par with modern and future EVs. There’s also illuminated DeLorean lettering at the front and back. It’s not just the gullwing doors that are a nostalgic ode to the car it succeeds. Even the rear glass louvers are a throwback to the future.

Apart from this, the images of the Alpha5 reveal stylized aero wheels, a charging port of the driver’s side front fender, dual-tone-finishes, and two exterior shades. The sloping roofline and the unconventional door handles aid the car’s aerodynamic efficiency, which is rated at 0.23.

DeLorean has also given the dimensions of the car. The Alpha5 is 196.7 inches (4,995 mm) long, 80.5 inches (2,044 mm) wide, and 54 inches (1,370 mm) tall. The wheelbase measures 90.6 inches (2,300 mm), whereas the front and rear overhangs are rated at 39.4- and 78.5 inches (1,000- and,1995 mm), respectively.

On the inside, things are as modern as you’d expect them on a mainstream EV. It comes without a whole lot of physical buttons and knobs. DeLorean has ditched a massive in-your-face touchscreen on the dash. to make it a little unique. Instead, it is placed on the center tunnel at a tilted angle. There is a fully digital instrument cluster as well behind the flat-bottom, three-spoke steering wheel. We also noticed there are no stalks here – inspiration from Tesla’s yoke setup?

As for the seating, the Alpha5 is a four-seater, which makes it a practical, family sedan. The lack of a B-pillar should make the ingress and egress extremely easy.

The company has noted that the Alpha5 will be able to sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in 2.99 seconds, and to 88 mph in 4.35 seconds. The top speed will be capped at 155 mph. It will boast a 100+ kWh battery pack that will give enough juice to the car to cover over 300 miles on a single charge.

The power outputs, however, are still a mystery. If you think these specs are impressive, there’s another good news. These specs are for the base performance model. Unless DeLorean is messing around with us, expect hotter versions with even better specs to follow.

Conclusion

The DeLorean Alpha5 will be launched at the Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance in August 2022, and we can expect a full-spec reveal at that time. For the stuff that’s on offer and the fan-following this brand has, we don’t expect the Alpha5 to be cheap. And, did we mention the production will be limited to just 88 examples? Yeah, it just got even more expensive. The DeLorean Alpha5 is still some time away as it will enter production in 2024.
