When it comes to performance cars, horsepower and torque are usually the only figures we take into account when comparing them. That's a logical thing to do, but sometimes these numbers can be deceiving. This new video from CarWow brings together a BMW M5 tuned to an insane 1,000 horsepower and a stock Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. Can the Porsche keep up with the beefed-up sedan? Is horsepower the decisive factor here? Let's find out.

Both vehicles feature all-wheel drive, so traction is not an issue during a drag race. But the 911 Turbo S is lighter at 3,770 pounds, whereas the BMW M5 tips the scales at a notably fatter 4,277 pounds. Based on these figures alone, the BMW M5 should win this drag race.

And indeed it does, but the video illustrates how horsepower can sometimes be deceiving. Even though it features an extra 350 horses over the Porsche, the BMW struggles off the line and falls behind the 911 over the first few feet. The Porsche is obviously quicker to 60 mph, but then the BMW catches up and goes in front. But even though it's significantly more powerful, the BMW wins only by a few inches. The M5 is off to a better start during the second run, but it also loses the battle to 60 mph. It eventually crosses the quarter-mile line after 10 seconds, while the 911 Turbo S comes behind in 10.3 seconds. That's a surprisingly small difference given the power deficit.

So yeah, more power doesn't necessarily make a car much quicker. The BMW is the slower car over short distances, but it wins in the long run. And as the second half of the video shows, it remains faster above 150 mph, and it doesn't struggle to hit that magical 200-mph mark.
