A few days ago, we caught wind of Ferrari’s $30,000 book and engine sculpture offering. If for nothing else, the book was a flex in audacity on the part of the Italian automaker. But as it turns out, Ferrari isn't the only automaker that’s floating an opus of its own. British automaker Bentley is in on the fun, as well. Its book, called the Bentley Centenary Opus, is a celebration of the company’s 100th anniversary, and while it doesn’t have a price tag yet, it does have its own attention-grabbing quality: it weighs 30 kilos, which converts to around 66 pounds.

The Full Story

If you thought Ferrari’s own opus was magnificent, prepare yourselves for what Bentley has in store with the “Bentley Centenary Opus.” There are no images of the tome yet, but according to Bentley, it has pages that measure up to 1.5 square feet with some special gatefold pages measuring six feet across. I can’t picture how that’s going to translate in the flesh, but I imagine it’s going to be enormous.

If that book is going to be as big as I think it will be, it should have the kind of content that’s going to fit in all of those pages. Fortunately, Bentley literally has 100 years worth of source material to choose from, including all the people who have helped build the brand’s history, countless iconic models, and a racing pedigree that dates all the way back to the 1920s. Content’s not going to be a problem with this book, I imagine.

To make it more interesting, Bentley isn’t just releasing one version of the Centenary Opus because that’d be too dull. Instead, the British automaker has three distinct versions for its massive tome. Two of these three versions — “Mulliner” and “Centenary” — will be limited editions presented in the latest print format. The third version, on the other hand, will be called “Crewe,” and it will be offered in a far more traditional and accessible size.

Suffice to say, the Bentley Centenary Opus is more than just a book of Bentley’s history. In the same vein as Ferrari’s own book, it’s a celebration of the automaker’s history and a launching pad for its future. There’s no better way to think of it than in those terms, even though the expected price tag is probably going to be typical of Bentley, too. I don’t expect it to cost $30,000 like the Ferrari book — Bentley didn’t say anything about sculptures coming in with the book — but it should still cost way more than what you expect a book to cost. And for what it’s worth, you might need to find a strong and sturdy shelf or table that can carry the weight of a 66-pound book.
