Edmunds has been staging some pretty cool drag races at Willow Springs off late. They recently pit the Mustang Mach-E Performance against the Tesla Model Y and the Shelby GT500. In yet another Gas vs Electric showdown, the Mach-E takes on a proper mid-engined supercar in the form of the C8 Chevy Corvette.

Now don’t dismiss the crossover just yet as this pair are closely matched on both performance and price, but what needs to be seen is how do these numbers translate on track. Well, you’re about to find out.

Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance

In the yellow corner, we once again have Ford’s Mustang Mach-E GT Performance. This higher spec version of Ford’s all-electric crossover features dual motors that produce a combined output of 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque. Do note that full power is only available for five seconds before power is dialed down so that the battery doesn’t degrade prematurely. The Mach-E Performance tips the scales at 4997 pounds and packs all-wheel-drive traction.

Chevrolet Corvette C8

With the latest C8 Z06 under the limelight these past couple of months doesn’t mean that you can ignore the regular Chevy C8 can you? Edmunds had a gorgeous example finished in a frankly striking shade of blue for this face-off. Under the hood of the Vette lies a 6.2 liter V-8 that produces 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Now although the C8 is down on torque, the Vette at 3649 pounds is 1348 pounds lighter than the Ford.

Round One

With the numbers out of the way, let’s get started with round one. As the Ford doesn’t come with launch control, it is set to its most sporty mode, while the Vette is in track mode. Three, two, one, and both cars manage to get the perfect launch, with both of their neck and neck till 60 mph. Past that point, however, as Ford’s power trails off, the Corvette begins to pull away and takes round one. The pair were surprised by the Mach-E’s performance and how the Check actually took ⅛th of a mile to actually pull away from the Mustang.

Round Two

They turn around to do a second standing quarter to see if the results are any different. Mind you, the Mustang has propulsion sound turned on this time around. They’re off and with the Corvette’s driver may have gunned it before they heard GO!!! As a consequence, the blue car was ahead of the Mustang from the get-go on this pass with that gap only getting bigger, all the way to the finish line. 113 mph at the traps for the Vette.

Roll Race

We’re now down to the definitive roll race and the two cars begin their run from 30mph around the final corner before gunning it past the cone on the main straight, and the driver in the Mustang chose at the very last moment to jump the start. Okay, so the Ford was in the lead now, but crucially, and the Vette get past before they run out of room? Well, unfortunately, the ¼ mile wasn’t enough for the C8 to take down the Mustang, but the two drivers agree that given enough room, the results would have been very different indeed.

Final Thoughts

Okay, overall the guys at Edmunds are very impressed with the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance. For the kind of vehicle, that it is there’s a lot on offer here, for the money, especially if you need the extra space and practicality, otherwise the C8 really is a no-brainer.

However, the comments section of this YouTube video is rife with current and future owners of the Mach-E on why did Ford choose a mere five seconds. Maybe this can be altered to a longer duration via an OTA update we don’t know. But these guys certainly can’t wait to get the Z06 on track soon and I sure as hell am excited about those upcoming duels.
