Former professional wrestler and current ubiquitous action movie fixture Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to reprise his role as Luke Hobbs in the eighth Fast & Furious movie. In addition, Johnson revealed he’s also in talks to do a stand-alone Hobbs spinoff movie, possibly to be released after the next F&F.

Nerd Report asked Johnson about his future plans for the Hobbs character at the recent premier for San Andreas. “Of course,” he said. “Can’t go on without Hobbs.”

The eighth F&F movie is slated for release in 2017. Vin Diesel has already confirmed he’s on board and Paul Walker’s brother, Cody Walker, is rumored to be playing Jack O’Conner, the brother to Paul’s character, Brian O’Connor. It’s all a bit up in the air now, but everything should come into focus in the coming months.

As for the Hobbs spinoff, Johnson told reporters at the press event, “We all are interested in it. I just had a big conversation with the studio. So we’ll see. I still think for me personally we’ve created a little bit of space for him in 7 and the gauge is set for what the audience will want. That’s my take on it, you know, but a lot of other people have to have input."

Why it matters

Considering Dewayne Johnson plays one of the most well-liked characters in a multi-billion-dollar franchise, his return doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, but it’s definitely welcome.

Among the F&F cast, Hobbs is less of a car guy and more the guy who shows up with a helicopter Gatling gun and blows everything to hell. So, we would expect a stand-alone Hobbs flick to be less car-focused and more of a romantic comedy in the mold of When Harry Met Sally. Just kidding. It’s going have more explosions and destruction than all the Die Hard and Terminator movies combined.
