Is the i4 really a good competitor for the Model 3? Learn what we have to say and decide for yourself.

This is the all-new BMW i4, an all-electric four-door gran coupe that will sort of, kind of compete with the Tesla Model 3. So let’s see what it’s all about, shall we?

Unveiled during BMW’s annual conference, the new i4 will go on sale this year with an estimated range of up to 300 miles or 482 kilometers. And with some help from the BMW M division, there’s also a sporty variant in the works, that will offer a total power output of 390 kilowatts or 530 horsepower, all wheel drive, and a zero to 62 miles per hour time of just four seconds.

Lower-spec, rear-wheel drive only variants will be available as well, just like with the recently-unveiled iX crossover.

There are no interior shots of the car yet, but it’s safe to say that the new electric i4 will get BMW’s new iDrive 8 infotainment system which features a redesigned interface, over-the-air updates, better safety, and a dual-screen layout that consists of a 14.9 touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

This new iDrive system will somehow be integrated into the current interior design of the 3 series, seeing how the two cars are similar in size and shape. And also, this being touted as a four-door gran coupe, we can expect to see an internal combustion engine variant of the i4 under the 4 Series Gran Coupe moniker.

These are all the technical details that BMW has so far published, and it’s not much, that’s for sure. But the German brand says there will be more coming soon, so subscribe and click the bell icon to get notified when we post new videos, so you don’t miss the news.

As for the design, the new i4 is basically like a new 3 Series, with the big difference that it has a swoopier back end and some blue accents to show off its electrons. Up front, there’s the usual beaver-like grille that incorporates all sorts of sensors for various safety features, like the adaptive cruise control. It’s not pretty, but at least it doesn’t look like the iX, which is a bonus.
