It's not just fully electric cars that are quick. These two EV pick-up trucks put on an impressive display of power
The Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV are among the latest players in the high-performance EV segment. They also prove performance comes in every shape and size, even if it's big and rugged
Tesla Model X Plaid attempts to school the newcomers
The Tesla Model X is here only as an honorable guest, since it represents the brand that founded the high-performance EV segment. Will it defend its title with honor against the more utilitarian contenders?
GMC Hummer EV
At 9,046 lbs, the GMC Hummer EV is a heavy beast. Its 3 electric motors - 2 at the rear and 1 at the front - are good for 1,000 hp and 1,100 lb/ft. 0-60 mph is possible in 3.0 seconds, when you activate "Watts to Freedom" mode
Rivian R1T
Rivian's pick-up truck is lightweight by comparison - "just" 7,148 lbs. It also has 4 electric motors - 1 for each wheel. They produce 800+ hp and over 900 lb/ft. 0-60 mph is also possible in 3.0 seconds, when in Sport Mode
Tesla Model X Plaid does not need an introduction
For the record, its 3 electric motors - 1 at the front, 2 at the rear - are good for 1,020 hp and 1,050 lb/ft. Tesla also weighs a lot less - 5.390 lbs. With "Cheetah Stance", 0-60 mph is possible in 2.5 seconds
As expected, Tesla Model X Plaid wins the drag race with ease
Who would have guessed that the sleeker, more powerful, and lightest car of the group would win? On a serious note, the real race was between the 2 pick-up truck EVs, and it was much closer
The first race is a classic, 1/4-mile heads-up drag race from a dig
The much lighter Rivian R1T had a better launch and despite having less power, it stayed in the front, until the finish line. The Hummer was about 2 car lengths behind and was not falling behind
The roll race should give the heavier GMC Hummer EV a bit of an advantage
However, that never happened. Rivian R1T beat the Hummer to the finish line, just as easily. In both cases, the EV trucks reached their respective (limited) top speeds with ease

Despite the Tesla Model X Plaid wiping the floor with both of them, it's impressive to see how quick these behemoths are from a dig. These EV trucks are a lot more than just drag race results. Which one would you drive home?
